Chapter Twenty-Five

Karla Frankel

The shots missed them. They were clearly meant as a warning.

Driving past Miranda’s house, the driver slowed once again. Someone opened the back door of the car and threw Karla Frankel’s body on the street. The officer parked out front of Miranda’s heard the shots and saw the body tossed out of the car. He called for backup, bringing more police and an ambulance.

Bryan and Miranda were fine

Karla Frankel didn’t need an ambulance. She had been shot in the head. She needed a coroner.

An hour later, the car was found abandoned on a dead-end street by the undercover officer who had been in the bar. It had been reported stolen earlier in the day. Forensics would be kept busy with it for hours. There was blood in the trunk and back seat. There were fingerprints from half a dozen people.

“There are more bad guys in your life than a British Mystery,” Agatha said.

“You mean more bad guys than in my stories,” said Raymond, bragging.

Ignoring his colleagues, Sherlock announced, “I believe things will escalate going forward. Mark my words.”

Miranda longed to tell them to shut up. There were too many people around for it to look like she was talking to herself.

The police were searching Karla’s apartment for the second time. She had abandoned it after being implicated in the attempt to kidnap Miranda. Ramon Sanchez was the investigating officer. Wilson was clearly sidelined.

“Detective Anderson the place is a mess. It doesn’t look like she’s been back here.”

“Talk to the neighbors. Maybe someone heard or saw something.”

“I tried sir. Most people wouldn’t open their door. It’s easy to see they’re afraid of getting involved. I’m going to take another look in the victim’s apartment. When I was in there I thought there was a strong perfume smell. Seemed out of place.”

“Karla might have gone there to hide something,” said Anderson, who was appreciating working with this police officer. He had none of the bravado and obnoxious language which usually accompanied Detective Wilson.

Officer Sanchez had been on the force for almost ten years. He had been taught the importance of fairness and justice for everyone. His father and grandfather had been police officers where he grew up in Las Cruces, New Mexico. A little less than four hours from Albuquerque, it had become known in recent years as a travel destination, offering beautiful views along with great New Mexican culture and food. But when Sanchez was offered a job on the force in Albuquerque, he was thrilled to work and live, “in the big city.”

In his late thirties, married with three kids, he had joined the force after two tours with the Marines. Everyone except the captain called him Ray and Detective Bryan Anderson found he liked working with him.

Sanchez had come back on the line. “Detective, I found something hidden under loose carpeting between the bedroom and bathroom. I’ll meet you at the station with it.”

Sanchez’s find proved invaluable to the investigation of Karla Frankel’s murder and even offered a clue to the other murders.
